    BLS and EMDR: What Is the Difference?

    BLS (bilateral stimulation) is a neurobiological mechanism that activates the body’s natural adaptive information-processing system. It alternately engages the left and right hemispheres of the brain through visual, auditory, or tactile cues.

    EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy system that includes an eight-phase protocol guided by a specialist, where BLS is one part of the overall therapeutic process. EMDR uses BLS for deep processing of severe trauma.

    How and Why Does It Work?

    Normally, the brain processes incoming information and moves it into long-term memory as part of your experience, marking the event as completed. The prefrontal cortex, responsible for logic and analysis, and the hippocampus, the memory archivist, help make this possible.

    During intense stress or threat, the work of these systems can be blocked by the amygdala, the fear center that sends danger signals. Processing stops, and you may feel as if you are frozen inside the event. The memory remains stuck in neural networks in its original form, with sharp emotions and body reactions. Any similar cue, or trigger, can make the amygdala respond as if the danger were happening right now.

    How Does BLS Help Processing?

    Bilateral stimulation activates the brain’s natural adaptive functions by imitating processes that occur during REM sleep, the rapid-eye-movement phase. During REM, the brain normally sorts and integrates the day’s impressions. BLS deliberately starts a similar process.

    Reducing emotional intensity: rhythmic stimulation creates a dual load on working memory. This can reduce the vividness of a painful image and soften its emotional charge.

    Activating the hemispheres: alternating activation helps restore communication between emotional centers and the prefrontal cortex. This unlocks stuck information and emotional components so the rational part of the brain can finally process them.

    This is exactly why severe trauma and deeply painful memories should not be worked with independently, without a therapist. BLS opens access to the sensations and experiences that were blocked at the moment of trauma. There is a risk of intense emotional release and retraumatization: emotions may overwhelm you again.

    Integrating the experience: BLS helps the hippocampus finish archiving the data. The event shifts from the status of threat to the status of a neutral past.
